BIRMINGHAM MICHIGAN
Memorial Day Weekend - 2012
Birmingham during Memorial Day 2012
It was perfect day to take note of just what a fine town Birmingham is — and hundreds did just that
Sunday as they took part in the Celebrate Birmingham Parade.
There were kids and dogs and high school bands, along with fire trucks and flashy cars and even a
tractor, all walking, trotting and rolling down the streets of Birmingham.
Following the parade, a host of activities was held at Shain Park. And all of it was held under a bright
spring sky that made for an excellent afternoon enjoyed by all.

If this estimate were true, it would indeed make an impressive case for the rapid pace of population growth in this century. But if we judge the idea that three-fourths of people who ever lived are alive today to be a ridiculous statement, have demographers come up with a better estimate?
Any such exercise can be only a highly speculative enterprise, to be undertaken with far less seriousness than most demographic inquiries. Nonetheless, it is a somewhat intriguing idea that can be approached on at least a semi-scientific basis.
And semi-scientific it must be, because there are, of course, absolutely no demographic data available for 99 percent of the span of the human stay on Earth. Still, with some speculation concerning prehistoric populations, we can at least approach a guesstimate of this elusive number.
With all our college classmates here it gives us something to think about during our retirement years.

RECOMMENDED READING
SET UP and SOLD OUT
Set Up and Sold Out is a revealing look into the secret side of environmental politics. Americans
must understand there is a subversive motivation behind the push for drastic change and rigid
environmental regulations. We are all involved. This is not a liberal vs. conservative or a Republican
vs. Democrat issue. This situation transcends all others. No one is exempt.
Before better distinctions can be made, a general grasp of the situation is required. What does Green
really mean? To most Americans, green still means the color. Many people now associate the color
green with the environmental cause. Most Americans do not realize the word green is now defined in
political terms.

THE PASSING OF A LEGEND
ROY ROGERS
(November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998),
Roy Rogers, born Leonard Franklin Slye (November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998), was an
American singer and cowboy actor, one of the most heavily marketed and merchandised stars of his
era, as well as being the namesake of the Roy Rogers Restaurants franchised chain. He and his wife
Dale Evans, his golden palomino, Trigger, and his German Shepherd dog, Bullet, were featured in
more than 100 movies and The Roy Rogers Show. The show ran on radio for nine years before
moving to television from 1951 through 1957. His productions usually featured a sidekick, often either
Pat Brady (who drove a Jeep called "Nellybelle"), Andy Devine, or the crotchety George "Gabby"
Hayes. Rogers's nickname was "King of the Cowboys". Evans's nickname was "Queen of the West."

You and I were born at the right time. We were able to grow up with these great people even if we
never met them. In their own way, they taught us patriotism and honour, we learned that lying and
cheating were bad, and sex wasn't as important as love. We learned how to suffer through
disappointment and failure and work through it. Our lives were drug free.

Schools Abandon Textbooks To Go All iPad
>
Burlington High School Principal Patrick Larkin shows off his iPad at Here & Now studios at
WBUR in Boston. (Jesse Costa/Here & Now) >
Apple reports schools in more than 600 districts have bought iPads for all of their students. And it’s
not happening just in wealthy suburbs. Schools in urban districts like New York City and Chicago are
also handing out iPads. In the Boston area, Burlington High School launched a one-to-one iPad
program in the fall, providing a tablet for each student.
It cost the school about $500,000 for the devices, and the principal, Patrick Larkin, said the school
paid for them within its existing budget. How To Pay For iPads? The school saved money by getting
rid of its computer labs, abandoning plans to build a new language lab and deciding it would no
longer buy new textbooks.Larkin said they didn’t throw away the old books, but no longer need to buy
new ones, since students and teachers can find everything they need online. Larkin said the school isn’t
even buying electronic versions of textbooks, since they end up costing the schools more than
traditional ones in the long run.

they have one on the shelf. I was almost tempted to purchase one but, no, I am going to purchase a little

OUR SCHOOLS TODAY
SERVICES OUTSOURCING
As our public school system is ever increasingly feeling the economic squeeze, just a we are, more
and more school systems are electing to outsource many school positions which they once totally
controlled. Many of the school employees are often reemployed by the service companies which then
continue these essential school services.
One of the benefits to the community school systems is it eliminates the rising cost of providing
employee wage ratirement benefits to retirees.
The Bloomfield Hills School District has considered this option however I am unsure to the extent
it has been implemented .

EARTH DAY 2012
IT'S A DOG'S DAY
with Christy Anderlik
What is Earth Day? >
Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin) and first celebrated in 1970. Earth Day was originally designed as a day for college students to raise awareness and appreciation for the Earth. Earth Day’s message has developed and now reminds us of the beauty of this planet that we all call home. Every year it is celebrated on April 22. It is a day that reminds all 7 billion plus of us that we are not merely bystanders but all of our actions affect our home.

Marty Robbins and The Drifters
MARTY ROBBINS
Born Martin David Robinson (September 26, 1925–December 8, 1982), known
professionally as "Marty Robbins", was an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. One
of the most popular and successful country and Western singers of his era, for most of his nearly four
-decade career, Robbins was rarely far from the country music charts, and several of his songs also
became pop hits.
The Drifters are a long-lived American doo-wop and R&B/soul vocal group with a peak in popularity from 1953 to 1963, though several splinter Drifters continue to perform today. They were originally formed to serve as Clyde McPhatter's (of Billy Ward & the Dominoes) backing group in 1953.

YEARS OF GREAT MEMORIES
>
Summer camper John Hufstader and John now in 2012
Interestingly, many of our classmates have children and grandchildren to brag about.
Then there is me, Richard, who never married and never had my own family.
However, I did enjoy summer camping for over 14 years [1959-1973] with some thousand or more campers, --
(also during that time period I was a student counselor and boy's dormitory supervisor [1960-1963] at The Leelanau Schools, Glen Arbor, Michigan) -- So I get to brag over "my boys" once in awhile. -- One of my summer campers and friend, John Hufstader, is pictured above. Yes, I enjoyed my Leelanau experience and knowing my friend "JohnO" is certainly a blessing in my life.
JOHN's EXPERIENCE THROUGH LIFE John first attended camp in 1963 at age 7; then returned every summer becoming a CT in 1972; a Counselor in 1973, and finally as Head Counselor in 1981. Great family, one son -
Jacob. John is presently
Associate Professor of Communications [2001-2012] at Saint Joseph College in Maine. Congratulations JohnO.

THE PENCIL
>
A PENCIL MAKER TOLD THE PENCIL FIVE IMPORTANT LESSONS JUST BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE BOX :
1. EVERYTHING YOU DO WILL ALWAYS LEAVE A MARK .
2. YOU CAN ALWAYS CORRECT THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE.
3. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS WHAT IS INSIDE OF YOU.
4. IN LIFE , YOU WILL UNDERGO PAINFUL SHARPENING, WHICH WILL ONLY MAKE YOU BETTER.
5. TO BE THE BEST PENCIL, YOU MUST ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE HELD AND GUIDED BY THE HAND THAT HOLDS YOU.
We all need to be constantly sharpened. This parable may encourage you to know that you are a special person, with unique God-given talents and abilities. Only you can fulfill the purpose which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot be changed and, like the pencil, always remember that the most important part of who you are, is what's inside of you.>

THE NEW FORD TRUCK
>
I bought a new Ford F250 Tri-Flex Fuel Truck. Go figure it runs on either hydrogen, gasoline, or E85.
I returned to the dealer yesterday because I couldn't get the radio to work.
The service technician explained that the radio was voice activated.
'Nelson,' the technician said to the radio. The radio replied, 'Ricky or Willie?'
'Willie!' he continued and 'On The Road Again' came from the speakers.
Then he said, 'Ray Charles!', and in an instant' Georgia On My Mind' replaced Willie Nelson.
I drove away happy, and for the next few days, Every time I'd say, .... 'Beethoven,'
I'd get beautiful classical music, .... and if I said, 'Beatles,' I'd get one of their awesome songs.
But yesterday, some guy ran a red light and nearly creamed my new truck but I swerved in time to
avoid him. I yelled out, 'A@## H%$$' and immediately the radio responded with,
Ladies and Gentlemen, The President of The United States. "D*** I love this truck"
Disclaimer-- LOL, yet, seriously, a little disrespectful of the "Office of the President". Pray for the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT and for AMERICA for we do live in a serious moment in time..

Even the cows appreciate good music >
You see animals are not dumb as many think, if fact, I believe they cannot stand the modern day secular music by socalled christian bands. (LOL)>

THIS DOG
NOT FOR SALE
From the email inbox
IN RESPONSE TO THE EMAILS CONCERNING THIS DOG...
Please be advised I am sick and tired of receiving questions about my dog who bit six people wearing
Obama tee shirts, four Democrats wearing Pelosi tee shirts, nine teenagers with pants hanging down
past their cracks, and three flag burners.
FOR THE LAST TIME...THE DOG IS NOT FOR SALE !

THE AMERICAN POLITICAL SCENE
AMERICA TODAY
"a forum about our great country"
>
STAND UP AMERICA
AMERICA, that's our country! If you listen to today's news you will find that it's being ripped apart from every side sometimes by well-meaningful citizens who love and serve
our country.
STAND UP AMERICA
I believe it's rime for all citizens of this great country to put their political differences aside
and all pull together for one common cause - "AMERICA" - or else we will find ourselves
governed by an outside authority which we will have no control over.
THIS IS SERIOUS FOLKS
LET'S NOT FOOL OURSELVES.
Our Founding Fathers set up this great nation for us all.
"Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it." Proverbs 3:27 (KJV)
