Dear Classmates,
I have recently learned of the passing of one of our fellow classmates, Jerry Konkle. It is my
understanding that he passed away last Friday. I am currently in Florida and unfortunately have only
my email addresses with me so I cannot provide any more detail than that. I knew he was having
serious difficulty this past year as he was unable to make our Fall, 2012, 55th Reunion. This has been
a very long ordeal for him and Diane and I hope many of you wll reach out to her during this time of
bereavement. He was a wonderful classmate and a good friend to all of us and will be genuinely
missed. They live in Brighton and if any of you have the address sheets from our past reunions, that
address should be current. I'm sure Diane would appreciate hearing from many of you.
Please keep in mind that we have plans for a 60th Reunion in 2017 to be held at Western Golf and
Counytry Club as many at the last one said it was one of the nicer venues we have ever utilized.
Meanwhile, stay in touch, stay healthy, and keep in mind that "growing old is not for sissies."
Warm regards,
Art Voisin

MIKE BOWERMAN
TRAVERSE CITY — Francis Eugene "Mike" Bowerman, 87, of Traverse City, passed away Friday,
April 6, 2012, at Munson Medical Center. Mike was born in Washington Township in 1924, the son of
Frank and Rose (Miller) Bowerman.
After graduating from Romeo High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army to join the allies in World War
II. He served his tour of duty in the Pacific as a B-29 Radio Operator with the 444th Bombardment
Group, the first B-29 Superfortress group ever established.
After the war, he enrolled at Michigan State University, enjoying success as a pole vaulter while
earning a B.S., M.S. and teaching certificate.
In 1946, he met Ruth Ann Sattler at MSU, and the two were wed the following year.
After graduating, Mike left East Lansing with his wife to begin his career as a teacher and coach in
Houghton Lake, where the young couple started to grow their family.
Mike enjoyed a successful career as a teacher and athletic coach for two decades, leaving Redford
Union High School in 1969 to enter the tool and die business with LaSalle Machine Tool and Acme
Cleveland Corporation. In 1979 his family ventured up from Highland Township to Traverse City,
where he would eventually retire.
Mike was an avid fisherman, sportsman and farmer who loved being out on the water as much as he
enjoyed having his hands in the soil.
Mike was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth Ann on Aug. 9, 2005.
He is survived by his son, Lawrence Bowerman, of Mount Morris; daughter and son-in-law, Susan
(Bowerman) and Gregory Worsnick, of Chaska, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann
(Bowerman) and Mark Deschaine, of Frankenmuth; daughter and son-in-law, Janet (Bowerman) and
Keith Anderson, of Oxford; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Sorenson-Lockwood
Funeral Home in Grayling, with private visitation for immediate family members from 3 to 4 p.m. A
funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, at St. Mary's Parish.

2012 FIFTY-FIFTH FALL REUNION
Dear Classmates,
You have been a faithful attendee at many of our RUHS Class of 1957 Reunions, and I need a special favor of you. Reva Wujcik, John Novak, and I recently went to Western Golf & Country Club and met with an events planner to arrange a fall reunion banquet there in 2012. We were extremely pleased with the ambience of the facility( it had recently undergone rennovations), and we were also able to plan a banquet meal with four entree choices that including all other expenses would make our single ticket price $33.00 and our couple price, $66.00. The best date open in September was Saturday, the 15th. Also, we might even be able to arrange a golf outing on Friday if enough attendees are interested.
We have run into a slight problem, the Club requires a $750.00 deposit fee which would be applied to our banquet fees in September to hold the date. We only have $290.00 in our current Reunion Fund, and we can't drain all of that out, or we won't have funds to pay for the mailings necessary for this event. I did pay the Club $250.00 as earnest money toward our required deposit, and they agreed to give me 30 days to come up with the rest of the deposit. This is where your help is urgently needed.
I am asking you faithful members of the Class of 1957 to send in your banquet fees early. I would need them by January 21, or before if possible. Please send $33.00 for a single, and $66.00 for a couple and you will be helping us out by allowing the Class of 1957, 55th Reunion planning for September 15, 2012 to go forward smoothly. This will be a bare bones banquet, with no fancy program or gifts, but just plenty of time for those in attendance to sit around and chat with whomever they wish. More details will follow once we getthe deposit money collected. Please remember to put the date on your calendar for September 15, 2012 as we enjoy our 55th Class Reunion! My sincere appreciation to each of you for any help you can offer.
I missed a paragraph on my draft of the letter you just received concerning early payment for the RUHS Class of 1957, Fall Reunion, September. 15, 2012.
Please send your check made out to RUHS Class of 1957, or to me, Arthur Voisin as my name is also on the account. My address is: 36552 Martel Ct., Farmington Hills, MI, 48335. I will let you know in January if we receive enough pre-payments. I can always expand the invitations for pre-payment to more class members, but I thought I would start with those most faithful attendees first.
Arthur Voisin
Thanks again for your support and Happy New Year!
With warmest regards,
Art Voisin, John Novak, Reva Wujcik, Sandra Scott

THE SEASONS OF LIFE
"AND THEN IT'S WINTER"
You know... time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.
It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went.
I know that I lived them all...
And I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.
But, here it is -- the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise.
How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?
I remember well...seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.
But, here it is... my friends are retired and getting gray, they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me, but, I see the great change.
Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day!
And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will, I just fall asleep where I sit!
And so... now I enter into this new season of my life -- unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!!
But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last ... this I know, that when it's over...it’s over.
Yes , I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done, things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done.
It's all in a lifetime.
So, if you're not in your winter yet, let me remind you that it will be here faster than you think.
So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly!
Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not!
You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember, and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!
"Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one."
BE KIND BE HELPFUL TO THOSE IN NEED ENJOY TODAY!
HAVE A GREAT DAY

OUR MONEY
Sometime this year, we taxpayers may again receive another 'Economic Stimulus' payment?
This is indeed a very exciting program, and I'll explain it by using a Q & A format:
Q.. What is an 'Economic Stimulus' payment ?
Q.. Where will the government get this money ?
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money ?
Q. What is the purpose of this payment ?
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
Instead, keep the money in America by:
1) Spending it at yard sales, or
(These are the only American businesses still operating in the U.S.)
Go to a ball game with a tattooed [person] that you met at a yard sale and drink [root] beer all day !
No need to thank me, I'm just glad I could be of help.

FRIENDSHIP
AND OUR FRIENDS
Why do I have a variety of friends who are all different in character ? Some of them have obvious flaws, but then, so do I.
How do I get on with them all ?
I think that each one helps to bring out a "different" part of me...With one of them I am polite and as refined as I can manage. I joke a lot with another. I talk about serious matters with one. With another I laugh a lot.
I share a glass of wine with one, And dance on occasion with another. I listen to one friend's problems and give them advice Then I listen to another advising me. They are all like pieces of a jigsaw. When completed they form a treasure box. A treasure of friends!
They are my friends who understand me better than I myself do, who support me through good days and bad days. They are the anti-depressants that I need to make it through life.
Doctors tell us that friends are good for our health. Dr. Oz calls them Vitamin F (for Friends) and recounts the many benefits of friends to our well being.
Research shows that people in strong social circles have less risk of depression and terminal strokes. The warmth of friendship reduces stress and can decrease your risk of cardiac arrest or stroke.
If you take Vitamin F constantly you can be a lot younger than your physical age. We should all value our friends and keep in touch with them.
Thank you for being one of my friends!

MINDSET LIST >
FOR COLLEGE GRADS OF 2015>
This year’s entering college class of 2015 was born just as the Internet took everyone onto the information highway and as Amazon began its relentless flow of books and everything else into their lives. Members of this year’s freshman class, most of them born in 1993, are the first generation to grow up taking the word “online” for granted and for whom crossing the digital divide has redefined research, original sources and access to information, changing the central experiences and methods in their lives. They have come of age as women assumed command of U.S. Navy ships, altar girls served routinely at Catholic Mass, and when everything from parents analyzing childhood maladies to their breaking up with boyfriends and girlfriends, sometimes quite publicly, have been accomplished on the Internet.
Each August since 1998, Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List, providing a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall. The creation of Beloit’s former Public Affairs Director Ron Nief and Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride, it was originally created as a reminder to faculty to be aware of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation. Mindset List websites at Beloit College and at mindsetmoment.com, the media site webcast and their Facebook page receive more than a million hits annually.

RUHS57 SUMMER REUNION>
Dear Classmates,
Please save this date for the RUHS Class of 1957, Summer Reunion Picnic, 54th Reunion to be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Camp Dearborn in Milford, Michigan. Please note the location change. State parks have raised their fees significantly so we are going to give Camp Dearborn a try this year. More details will be forthcoming. If you are planning on attending, please send your reservation information to Art Voisin ASAP and we will be able to list your name on the complete Invitation Letter which will be sent out by the end of June.
As you know, next year is our double nickle anniversary, our 55th year since graduation in 1957. For next year we are thinking of having a dinner celebration in September, 2012, at the Western Golf and Country Club. We are interested in knowing how many would like to do this. If you think you would attend this event next year, please send your name to Art Voisin also so we can begin to make plans for this major milestone.
Finally, We want to call your attention to our new website. C. Richard Edwards who was with our class from Kdg. through 10th grade, but graduated from Bloomfield Hills High School, has kept close contact with us and has created a new website full of pages of RUHS information for viewing pleasure. The new website can be seen at:

Please take a look at this site and enjoy the memories and drop Richard a [note * below] to tell him how much you appreciate his creative work.

something in common>
What did Presidents Hoover , Truman, and Eisenhower have in common?>
This is something that should be of great interest for you to pass around. I didn't know of this until it was pointed out to me. Back during the great depression, Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens
that desperately needed work.>
Harry Truman deported over two million illegal aliens after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.>
In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 million Mexicans. The program was called Operation Wetback. It was done so WWII and Korean veterans would have a better chance at jobs.
It took two years, but they deported them! >
Now if they could deport the illegal aliens back then, they could sure do it today. If you have doubts about the veracity of this information, enter Operation Wetback into your favorite search engine and confirm it for yourself.
Why you might ask can't they do this today? Actually the answer is quite simple. Hoover , Truman, and Eisenhower were men of honor, not untrustworthy politicians looking for votes!
Reminder: Don't forget to pay your taxes - 12 to 20 million illegal aliens - are depending on you!

January13, 2011 - (Thursday)
Keeping up with the times can sometimes be daunting.
A good laugh for people in the over 60 group !!! Also for those who know people like us.
When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie, Twittererific, Tweetdeck, Twitpix, and something that sends every message to my cell phone, and every other program within the texting world.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then, going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone, I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then, if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship.
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once, and have run around digging under chair cushions, and checking bathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets, when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out, just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them in with me.
Now, I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then, it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do toot a lot."
P.S. -- Facebook, something to think about. Are we up to it?>

Dear Classmates,>
I have talked with Dee and Jerry Horne and they have suggested two dates they could host the Class of 1957 Reunion Cruise this year in Florida. The dates are Wednesday, March 2, 2011, or Thursday, March 10, 2011. Please let me know ASAP if you are available on one of these dates, or both. Your response will determine the final date. I am only sending this to the people who have been invited previously, or have attended the event. Once a date is set we can open it up to other classmates just to see if anyone might be in the area. Complete information will be sent out just as soon as we have picked a date. Hope to see you all in Florida again this year. >
P.S. - If you know of a classmate (not listed in the email) who will be in Florida at this time, please send me their name and email address and I will be glad to include them in this survey.>
Thanks again.>

REMEMBER....
When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms,
flunk a test or chew gum. And the banquets were in the cafeteria and we
danced to a juke box later, and all the girls wore fluffy pastel gowns and
the boys wore suits for the first time and we were allowed to stay out till 12 p.m.
When a ‘‘57 Chevy was everyone's dream car. . . to cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch drag races, and people went steady and girls wore a class
ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss or yarn coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger.
And no one ever asked where the car keys were 'cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked. And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home, since no one ever had a key.
Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like "That cloud looks like a..."
And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group learning experience-it was a game.
Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals ‘‘cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger.
And...with all our progress...don't you just wish...just once...you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace...and share it with the
children of the 80's and 90's...
So send this on to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger,
The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk as well as the sound of a real mower on Saturday morning, and summers filled with bike rides, playing in cowboy land, baseball games, bowling and visits to the pool...and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.
Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived because their love was greater than the threat.
And was it really that long ago?

October 28, 2010 - (Thursday)
Also interesting that in October, 1950 there were only eight million television sets and 107 television broadcast stations in America.
Remember the whole family sitting together watching their favorite television show.
As soon as this was posted Ned Grant sent an email of early black and white television. This is interesting....
Black and White (Under age 40? You won't understand.)
You could hardly see for all the snow,
My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.
My Mom use to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I use to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.
We all took gym, not PE.. and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now. Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.
Speaking of school, we all said
prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.
We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a cap and everything.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.
I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.
Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.
Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.
I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?
We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even no tice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?
LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING
So you remember black and white television but do you
remember this.

Washington Post Staff Writers
When Republicans take over the House next week,
they will do something that apparently has never been done
before in the chamber's.
The House historian's office found no record of the Constitution
ever having been read aloud on the chamber's floor,
They will read the Constitution aloud. And then they will require that every new bill contain a statement
by the lawmaker who wrote it citing the constitutional authority to
enact the proposed legislation.
The reading of the Constitution will occur on Jan. 6,
one day after the swearing in of Speaker-designate John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).
The 4,543-word document, including all 27 amendments, could be read aloud in just 30 minutes.
But the exercise probably will last longer.

REDFORD UNION HIGH SCHOOL >
History of Redford Union High School>
Construction on the building we attended was begun in the fall of 1941. I believe the building opened for classes in 1942. Prior to construction of that building, the high school classes were housed at the Volney Smith school .
Redford Union Schools covered a portion of what is now the city of Detroit . In fact the first high school in Redford Townhip was actually located at the Solomon Burt School located at McNichols and Grand River (we knew the building as the Redford Branch of Detroit Receiving Hospital) and served as the high school until 1921 when the first unit of Redford High School opened.
Redford Union students attended high school in Detroit until a portion of the Redford Union District was annexed to Detroit and ninth and tenth grade students began classes at the Volney Smith School in the fall of 1929 Eleventh grade added in January, 1931.
I am assuming the first graduating class (RU) from the V. Smith building would have been January, 1932. I couldn't locate info on graduating classes prior to that although diplomas from buildings located in Detroit may have borne the RU name since the school district was in existence but did not have its own high school.
Some elementary buildings located in Detroit have cement nameplates above doors that say Redford Union Schools (Burt School and Harding are two that I've seen, but also Vetal, Yost, Mettetal, Houghten, Holcomb).
That was all prior to the annexation
The class of 1957 graduated from the Building on Puritan, constructed in 1941.
The current High School building was built at Curtis and Kinloch , completed in Oct. of 1954, as Redford Union Junior High School. Several additions have been made to the building since originally constructed.
In the fall of 1959, after completion of a second Jr. High building, the Puritan building became Lola Valley Jr. High (now Hilbert Middle School ) and the Curtis building became the current Redford Union High School.
Lola Valley Jr. High School (formerly RUHS) name was changed following the retirement of then superintendent, Russell Hilbert on June 12, 1968. It remained a junior High until about 2004 when sixth grade was transferred from elementaries, ninth to the high school and building now known as Hilbert Middle School.
(The Pearson Junior High was closed in 1979)
The district history was recorded up to 1989 by Dr. Lyle Kinsey. I have a copy of that book if you need more info. Hope this is helpful. This is a lot of info, but RU has a long and interesting history. The district, itself, dates back to 1842 with nine one or two room schools .
Additionally, Russell Hilbert was the superintendent of schools while we were in high school (some of his kids attended RUHS while we were there)
Merle Burdick was principal when some of us started at RUHS as 8th graders and Ward Estes was principal for most of our high school years.
